I'm considerably to the right of Will Self and I imagine there's a massive gulf between me and him on the nature of crime and how we should deal with it, but I completely agree with him on the uniquely sadistic nature people have towards children who commit evil acts. They're as fallen as the rest of us and the cartoonish hysteria we fall into when dealing with them suggests a lack of seriousness on our part as adults as much as we like to think it suggests a great seriousness

Self is absolutely right: there is something very strange and telling about the idea that collective society perceives the crime as even more evil because of the young age of the purpotrators.

Looking back on this from the future and boy it's depressing to see how people can be so easily lead by media outlets. The video nasty angle, people talking about the criminal justice system like they have an idea of how it works and what should be done, people baying for blood and revenge and thinking they're entitled to know anything about other people in life.

I don't think you have any understanding of or interest in the effect these monsters' actions had not just on the family but society generally. The killers should have been kept in jail until they were old enough to go to an adult prison. People deserve to know the whole truth. And yes, the boys were and always will be evil. Yes there was forethought - didn't you hear them say their plan was to take a young boy (they tried to take another child before James) and, by inference, hurt him. It's easy when it wasn't your child to have such a sympathetic and naive view of what contribution such creatures could ever make to society. It makes a mockery of James' life to do everything to ensure the killers have a full and carefree life while James lost his.

To my view, if there're still outrage in the British society when talking about Thompson and Venables, it certainly has to do with the sentencing and their detention conditions. Balanced to this crime, which mixes barbarity and cruelty, an 8-year sentence was too lenient. Moreover, testimonies about the detention conditions, like they had everything they want (video games, TV, lots of sweets), is just sickening. Unlike little James, they could take A-levels and GSCEs. The outrage would have been less violent if they were sentenced 15 or 20 years.

That guy defending his anonymity is just beyond ignorant. Of course James' mother Denise should know his identity and what crime he has committed. Sure it's not gonna bring James back but if her son was murdered by them, she needs to still know if any other members of her family might be at risk and yes, the new offence could have been something simple as a speeding fine but not knowing for sure is not sufficient. She has a right to know to know because THERE IS a possibility other members of her family could be harmed and frankly, they deserve protection... Not Jon Venables and if he had of committed a small crime, what's there to hide? But of course it was much more serious like Denise predicted and that matters as she even said years ago that she don't believe they could be rehabilitated because they were given everything. So by knowing if he has re-offended to that degree again, people can campaign for proper punishment. Jon also breached an order preventing him from coming back to Bootle and was drinking locally. Denise has nieces and friends who could speak to him or God forbid even date him without knowing. The general public should also know now because women are dating him without even knowing and could have a child with this monster. He also blatantly lies to protect them as Jon and Robert were NOT confused in the recordings of the police investigations. They very much understood why they were there and that killing little James was wrong. This also wasn't something that just happened. They HAD planned it as they tried to take a girl from school two weeks earlier and they even tried to take another child from the strand with the hopes of pushing them in front of a car before they took James so that guy is BLATANTLY ignorant or a huge liar because THEY DID plan it and that is evil and the public have a right to know if they are still evil and a threat to society.

He was and still is evil. People who justify their crimes on the basis that they were kids are actually stupid (and incredibly naive). I’m a psych major and have been studying abnormal and developmental psyche for years now. These kids 100% knew what they were doing and John Venerables exhibits psychopathic behavior both in terms of his crimes and lack of remorse. I swear listening to the audience gave me the impression that people from this region are just impressionable morons. Like when the asshole said “How would releasing his identity help the mother cope?” A proper response would have been “Who’s to say? I think Will’s thoughts may have been accurate with regards to Thompson, but there is a lot out there that points to Venables knowing exactly what he wanted to do that fateful day.

These children lied about what really happened to Jamie Bulger. They hid a sexual assault by first - beating him with rocks and then by putting his body on train tracks. How come the police have not made these conclusions? Jon Venables was a rapist and pedophile before this murder (Robert Thompson knows this). He was charged twice as an adult - once for child porn and the second time for downloading a manual for raping a child. He did not become a pedophile after he was released - he and Robert Thompson were already predators. Jamie Bulgers family and the citizens of Liverpool deserve justice - no matter how ugly the truth is. This story never made any sense --- what about these two kids --- the families must have known that they had been victimized --- they were made --- someone beat and raped them. The truth needs to come out --- isolate these two and get some answers --- release their real names - put them in prison, so they can pay for their crimes and fire these investigators. This will free many people in the UK and Liverpool.

Two minor boys charged with abduction and murder should be sentenced to death...They were vulnerable and evil..Before abduction of James they tried to abduct the child but child's mother timely action rescued the kid from their clutches..

I wonder whether Will Self would be quite so fiercely defensive of Venables now? It wasn't a non-payment of fines. It wasn't a traffic offence. It was the making, downloading and distribution of the worst type of child porn imaginable. Lynch mob mentality is almost always wrong. But very occasionally I think that certain offenders don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. They don't deserve to be rehabilitated and given a second chance. Jon Venables and Robert Thompson are two such people.
